The most notable statistic to be unveiled was the massive increase in sales of iPhones. It sold a whopping 35.1 million iPhones in the quarter – a rise of 88% since the same period last year.

iPad sales were also strong with 12 million sold in the quarter – an increase of 151% since this time last year.

Perhaps unsurprising was the news that iPod sales were down 15% on the same period last year – a direct consequence of more of us using multi-functional smartphones.

Apple’s overall sales growth was particularly impressive with more than $39 billion in revenue last quarter, and a growth of 59% year-on-year, which is much faster than its peers.

Fancy trading-in your old Blackberry?

Gazelle, a gadget recycling service has said that there has been an 80% increase in Blackberry users looking to get rid of phones since last week. Although iPhone has increased competition further by releasing a new phone, many people feel that this is not the sole reason for the spike. A great factor is the recent outage that many Blackberry users faced, which has certainly not helped the company. During the same period of time, Android trade-ins have also increased by 72%.

An executive at Gazelle said that this is “easily the highest volume of BlackBerry trades ever seen, period.” an executive at Gazelle told Cnet.

Within the first weekend of the iPhone 4S release, Apple sold 4 million handsets; this is more than double what they sold for the iPhone 4.

How many phones do you really need?
